Home to 9 Popes of the 14th century, this fortified Palace is symbolic of the Church’s influence over the Western world during that time. The Palace is full of halls and rooms, corridors and staircases that take you from one end to the other. Mostly cleared out of any sumptuous or lavish catholic decorations, you can still get a hint from the frescoes and a feel for the Papal life that was once carried on in the laregest existing Gothic palace in the world.

Read the story. A 12th century bridge that was the only crossing over the natural boundary between th Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Germanic Empire. The legend is that the sheephearder Bénézet heard divine voices instructing him to build the bridge. The bridge was destroyed by Louis VIII during the Albigensian Crusade and was rebuilt in the late 13th century. Raging flood water continually damaged the bridge until it was finally abandoned in the 17th century. It includes a small chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of bargemen.
