PLEASE USE THE FORM AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE TO MAKE YOUR SUBMISSIONS
artist-at-large.com is accepting literary and creative writing (non-fiction) and art project submissions that define the experience of travel to The South of France, not the itinerary.
From kimba’s blog:
I like publishing work that takes the reader on an inner journey, a thought provoking one. The only thing that is really hard to explain to potential writers is that I really want to write, and publish, moments. Zen moments. Colorful moments. 150 – 500 words on making eye contact with a stranger. Or how a place smells. Or a description of the color of a place. How you felt when you got ripped-off. How you felt when someone graced you with kindness. And only one sensory experience at a time, not all of them. Focus. I don’t care about itineraries. I don’t care about the plane ride (unless it’s a story in and of itself). I don’t care about what you did from sunup to sunset. I want to know what you did between 1:12 and 1:14pm. I care about the people my writers meet, the food they eat, and the color of the places they visit.
Writing should be honest, detailed and informative, whether that information is travel related, environmentally descriptive, emotionally revealing or relating to art or personalities met on the road.
What we are looking for:
Yes, you may be thinking at this point that there is a lot of straight up travel information published on the site, and that is true. It’s to aid our readers in finding everything to make their trip to The South of France a successful one. Here is what you should consider if you are going to submit a piece:
** We are looking for literary/creative non-fiction feature submissions about any aspect of The South of France, or culture or life, created specifically for artist-at-large.com.
** Focused travel, art and food writing with a personal and local perspective.
Photo of the Day
Photographs taken while on a trip to The South of France, *and* have a unique or interesting very short story to go with them.
Postcards from the Road
Postcards will be scanned both front and back and posted in the ‘Postcards from the Road’ category. Write your story on the card and then send it to the address in the footer. Postcards without stories or generic MailArt will not be published.
Interviews
Artists interviewing other artists, musicians interviewing painters, sculptors interviewing scientists … Interviews can be a few sentences or in-depth. An interview should include a photo or two. Does not need to be submitted as a proposal first, but understand that it may or may not be published.
There are two questions that we like to use to start the interviews:
- Where in the world have you traveled?
- Have your travels influenced your work or changed your view of the world?
There are two questions that we like to use to end the interview:
- If you had one recommendation to make to anyone visiting The South of France, what would it be?
- What is your favorite color? (color for artist, word for writer …)
Copyrights
Contributors retain all copyrights to their work.
Yes, you can republish if there is a link from the story back to the original post on this site.
Why? Because we like to think that the writing on artist-at-large.com is written specifically for the site, in a way that is not representative of other sites. If you feel that your story could be published on any travel site, then it’s probably not a fit for this one.
Exceptions to this policy are Photos/Videos of the Day and generic travel information (such as hotel, restaurant reviews).
Guest Writers and Contributors will get a byline, a small bio at the bottom of their story, with links back to their blogs or sites about The South of France and they will also be listed on the The South of France “About” page as a contributor.
Do we pay?
Unfortunately, no. We cannot pay at this time for your submitted pieces. Hopefully that will change in the near future.
Contributors MUST be willing to go through the editorial process.
Thanks for reading this far!
